What We Look For

Solid intellectual ability
Given the demanding pace of the program, you must have the ability to grasp complex concepts and synthesize new knowledge rapidly.

Demonstrated career progression
More important than the length of your career is the quality of your experience: we look at how your responsibility has increased, the breadth and depth of the knowledge you have acquired in the workplace, and the impact you have made on your organization.

Demonstrated leadership potential
To make the most of the IMD learning environment, you need to possess the foundation for strong leadership: knowledge, vision and courage; openness and willingness to learn; empathy with, and understanding of others; how to motivate and orchestrate.

Far-reaching international outlook
We look at the time you have spent living outside your country of origin, the international scope of your career and your knowledge of foreign languages.

Excellent interpersonal skills
The IMD MBA is highly interactive. Both in the classroom and out, communication is key to staying on top.

Once you feel confident that you can fulfill our admissions requirements, you need to complete the IMD MBA Application Form. The five possible application deadlines to choose from are: February 1, April 1, June 1, August 1 and September 1, but the earlier you apply, the better.

After each deadline, the IMD MBA Admissions Committee reviews all the complete applications we have received. Then, within 6 weeks, we either inform you that your application was unsuccessful or invite you to a personal on-campus interview for further evaluation*.

Following your interview, the Admissions Committee re-discusses your file, compares it to other applicants who have been interviewed, and comes to a decision. Normally, within one month of the interview, we let you know if you are among the select few to be accepted into the IMD MBA.

Accepted applicants are asked to confirm their intention to attend the program and to pay a non-refundable deposit to reserve their place.

Reapply
We occasionally encourage people to ?reapply? in a few years? time, but this decision does not guarantee admission at a later date. The reasons for a ?reapply? decision are communicated directly to you and may include: limited work experience, limited management responsibility, a weak GMAT score or limited international exposure. All reapply applicants must complete a new application but do not need to resubmit academic transcripts or the GMAT score unless there has been a change. The application fee is required with each application.

*All expenses are to be paid by the applicant.
Most MBA participants finance their year at IMD through a combination of personal savings, scholarships and bank loans, and many participants successfully apply for scholarships in their country of origin.

Program Fees
CHF 55,000 - tuition
CHF 20,000 - all program and project related fees, including the Bosnia-Herzegovina visit and lunch on-campus 5 days a week, excluding personal living expenses.

Fee Payment Schedule
On confirmation of attendance, a non-refundable deposit of
CHF 15,000 is required. This is followed by three installments of
CHF 20,000 each due on January 1st, April 1st and July 1st.
A participant leaving the program will not receive a refund.

Personal Living Expenses
Rent and other living expenses vary considerably depending on family situation and lifestyle, however the following are approximate estimates for a single person:

Annual base rent: CHF 13,000
Living expenses: CHF 23,000
Total annual budget: CHF 36,000
Advance deposits: CHF 1,000 (phone etc) & 3 month's rent

If you would like to accept the challenge the IMD MBA offers, please complete and submit your application online. After submitting your completed application, be sure to forward all the requested supplementary forms and recommendations to IMD by mail, to reach us before the deadline you are applying for.

A blank, read-only example of the application is available here application.pdf

The interview is a critical stage in our selection process. Only about one third of those who apply are invited*, not just for an interview, but for a complete evaluation consisting of the following:

An Impromptu Presentation: Once on campus, you will be given a topic on which to prepare a five minute presentation. This gives you an opportunity to demonstrate, amongst other things, your communication and presentation skills.

Case study: The IMD MBA includes extensive use of case studies. Therefore, we have included a mini case study to give you a feel for our teaching methods as well as to give us a feel for how you will contribute in this kind of setting.

Interview: Due to the small class size, we want to be sure that we meet the person behind the application. A member of the Admissions Committee or faculty conducts the interview with an aim to getting to know you and developing a better understanding of your career progression and key achievements.

MBA class observation: Where possible, you will sit in and observe our MBAs in the auditorium to give you the opportunity to assess us and our teaching style, just as we will be assessing you and your potential.

Lunch with MBAs: Talk to our current participants and ask them any questions you have about their experiences.

*All expenses are to be paid by the applicant
